MGA Official Peter Waldinger spent the morning clearing the green on Hole #3 so that players could complete their rounds at The Milton-Hoosic Club. |
Canton, MA Weather unfortunately stole the show at day one of qualifying for the 2010 Massachusetts Senior Amateur Championship.
Rainy and wet conditions in Canton forced what was a scheduled 18-hole qualifier to be reduced to nine holes.
Club staff and MGA staff and volunteer officials – many equipped with squeegees throughout the day – kept the course playable long enough for the 39-player field to finish nine holes.
After evaluating the course conditions and conferring with golf course superintendent Jeffrey Urquhart, the event’s official in charge – George Pendergast – made the decision during the morning hours to reduce the event to nine holes in order to allow for completion of play on Monday.
"All of the officials did a super job in very trying conditions at Milton-Hoosic," said Joe Sprague, the MGA's Executive Director who was on site assisting with the qualifier. "George Pendergast's decision to reduce the qualifying round was the perfect call. Jeff Urquhart and his assistant spent the entire morning with squeegees on the fourth green clearing the water in the players' line of putt, while [MGA Official] Peter Waldinger did the same on the third green."
In the end, a total of 25 qualifiers advanced and earned the right to compete in next month's Championship Proper, which is scheduled for September 13-14 at Plymouth Country Club. Leading the way with medalist scores of 3-over par 38 were James Drohen (Crystal Springs GC) and James Logue (Salem CC).
Drohen, the 2003 Massachusetts Senior Amateur Champion who earlier this season won the 2010 Massachusetts Father & Son Championship title with son Bill Drohen, used a chip in on the 323-yard, par 3 3rd hole to propel him to the top of the leaderboard. Waldinger – who was watching from the green – witnessed the shot from 105 yards away fall directly into the cup. The players first thought that it was a lost ball before realizing that it had dropped in for an eagle 2.
Logue, meanwhile, battled back from a triple bogey on the 434-yard, par 4 2nd hole to secure his qualifying spot. Many may recognize the name as Logue is both a standout senior amateur golfer and a former U.S. Olympic netminder and Boston College Varsity Club Hall of Fame member.
Two more qualifying events will be held on August 24 at Acoaxet Club and August 26 at Veterans Memorial GC.
