Headline: A Field of More Than 80 Bay State Golfers Take Part in the Inaugural MGA Member Days Event at Crestwood Country Club

For Immediate Release: May 25, 2010

Rehoboth, MA —It was a picture perfect day and a fitting start to the MGA Member Days program.

Under sunny and warm skies on Tuesday, more than 80 golfers traveled to Crestwood Country Club to take part in the inaugural MGA Member Days event.

Photo Caption: The more than 80 MGA Member Days competitors who took to Crestwood Country Club on Tuesday enjoyed the challenge of many holes including the 346-yard, par 4 1st hole.

The field may not have been made up of all scratch golfers, but perhaps more importantly it was a diverse cross section of the Bay State's golfing public who had one thing in common – a love for the game.

"It's an excellent idea," said Eric Lange (Nehoiden GC), who enjoyed today's round with three of his close friends. "The price is right, the course was awesome and we all had a fun day together."

Therein lies the ultimate goal of this series which was introduced in 2010 in order to give golfers of all age and skill level the opportunity to compete in an MGA Championship event. Included in the $60 entry fee was a round of golf, cart, range balls and a special tee gift.

While some came for the fun and time with their friends and – in some cases complete strangers – others were focused on the net and gross division prizes that were also available.

In the gross division, Ron Amado (Pawtucket CC) and Derek Johnson (Highland CC) both finished with 35 points. Amado claimed first place overall after the USGA card-matching method for breaking ties was used (with back nine Stableford point totals). Capping off the top four places were David Osborn (Weston GC) and Herschel McDunnah (Oak Ridge GC) with 32 and 31 points, respectively.

The net division title went to David Osborn (Weston GC), who edged Neil Caldeira (John F. Parker Municipal GC) following a match of cards. Frank Veto (New England CC) finished in third place with 38 points, while George Claussen (The Meadow at Peabody GC) was one point back of Veto.

"Everything the MGA runs is great," said Derek Johnson (Highland CC), "Today was a different type of day, especially since I hope to play in the Amateur Championship this summer.  This was a lot of fun."

True to its mission, the MGA Member Days is open to any golfer – male or female – who holds an up-to-date MGA/GHIN Handicap index.

The second MGA Member Day will be held on June 2 at Foxborough Country Club.

As was the case at Crestwood Country Club today, the field for that event is full. Such overwhelming response will no doubt set the stage for even more MGA Member Day events come 2011 and beyond.

"We have been looking forward to introducing these types of affordable events to the golfing public and I am honored to be a part of the inaugural series," said Joe Sprague, the MGA's executive director who was on hand all day in Rehoboth. "This is a stepping stone for even more such events in the future."
