Headline: New England Products Shawn Warren & Adam Rainaud Headline U.S. Open Local Qualifier at TPC of Boston
For Immediate Release: May 12, 2009
Norton, MA Today marked the first day of local qualifying for the 2009 U.S. Open Championship here in the Bay State. With nearly 100 players in the field, only six individuals earned the right to advance to next month’s Sectional Qualifying following an 18-hole round at the TPC of Boston in Norton.
The second of two local qualifying rounds will be held on May 18 at Crumpin-Fox Club. Players at both sites are hoping to eventually advance to Championship Proper, which will take place at Bethpage State Park in Farmingdale, New York on June 18-21.
On this day, it was Shawn Warren (Falmouth, ME) and Adam Rainaud (South Hadley, MA) who posted day-low scores of 2-under par 69 to claim co-medalist honors.
Warren has been a household name in New England for some time as he is a two-time Maine State Junior champion who won the Maine High School state championship in 2002. Then in 2003, he became the first amateur in 33 years to capture the Maine Open. The accolades continued on and included such feats as leading his team in scoring for four straight years at Marshall University and winning the Maine State Amateur Championship in 2006.
Following an accident in 2007, Warren has been looking to continue such success as a professional player on the Hooters Pro Golf Tour. If today’s round is any indicator on what is to come, the future looks bright as Warren carded four birdies and two bogies during his stellar round on a usually challenging TPC of Boston layout, the site of the Deutsche Bank Championship.
Matching Warren’s score of 2-under par 69 was Rainaud, another local product out of Western Massachusetts who is coming off a stellar four-year golf career at the University of Louisville. Rainaud made his professional debut last summer at the Golfer’s Warehouse Pro Tour event in Newport, Rhode Island. In Norton, Rainaud quickly made up for a bogey on the first hole by registering four birdies and only one bogey through his final 17 holes of golf.
Two amateur players were among the six qualifiers to earn a spot at U.S. Open Sectional Qualifying, which will be held at regional sites across the world next month. Those two amateurs were Bun Young Lee (Montreal, Quebec) and Peter Williamson (Hanover, NH).
