Headline: 29th Massachusetts Four-Ball Championship Set for May 4-5 at Ledgemont Country Club & Crestwood Country Club

Norton, MA — Following a long, cold winter, the golf season will officially begin for the Massachusetts Golf Association (MGA) on May 4 with the first day of the 29th Massachusetts Four-Ball Championship.

This year's two-person team event will be contested at two MGA Member Clubs - Ledgemont Country Club and Crestwood Country Club. During the two-day championship, a total of 192 teams will compete in 36 holes at four-ball stroke play in hopes of capturing the MGA's first championship title of the 2009 season.

One year ago, the Massachusetts Four-Ball Championship set the stage for what became a memorable season for one golfer - Brian Higgins (Franklin CC). Higgins' spectacular season kicked off on a high note when he partnered with friend and fellow club member Brad Stewart (Franklin CC) to win the 2008 Massachusetts Four-Ball Championship.

The Bellingham-resident went on to win the Massachusetts Mid-Amateur Championship, qualify for two USGA Championship Proper events and collect a season-high 903 MGA Richard D. Haskell MGA Player of the Year points.

This year, the Higgins and Stewart duo will look to defend their title against some stiff competition. Higgins and Stewart will begin their title defense on Monday at Crestwood Country Club at 8:10 a.m. The pair will tee off alongside another strong team of Doug Clapp (Walpole CC) and former Massachusetts Amateur Champion Andy Drohen (Crestview CC).

In preparation for the start of the 2009 Massachusetts Four-Ball Championship, the MGA has made available starting times, pairings and course assignments for the first and second rounds of play.

The Massachusetts Four-Ball Championship debuted in 1981 and has become one of the most popular events on the MGA Championship schedule. The event is open to two-person teams of amateur golfers who hold membership in an MGA member club and have an up-to-date combined MGA/USGA Handicap Index not exceeding 6.0.
